Community Outreach

Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8

As part of the AstraZeneca “SSF Radical Pitch” Volunteer Initiative to increase STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Education Outreach in underserved communities in the Bay Area and impact youth by exposing students to possible careers in STEM, several Acerta employees visited Buena Vista Horace Mann Community School on May 8, 2019 to teach 6 classes of 6th & 7th graders.

The lesson plan created covered the genetic and environmental factors affecting incidence of cancer, with a focus on lymphoma. Students were very engaged and provided evidence of learning when surveyed at the end of the lesson, and the science teachers involved were emphatic that they would like to have the team back for future lessons – one teacher even reported that this lesson was the best activity his students had experienced all year!
